Description
An 8 year old Glen Scotia, a distillery bottling, from 2016, cask 24/852-5, at 56.2%, 116 bottles in all. Glen Scotia, founded in 1832, is one of the three surviving Campbeltown distilleries. It was founded in 1832 as Scotia, one of the survivors of Campbeltown's Victorian whisky boom.
Worked through the stills for an oily, coastal make, for the salty, oily make Glen Scotia is known for. Maturation came in a Tawny Port cask, layered over the briny Glen Scotia make. Young and extractive, the cask sheds vanillin (vanilla) and toasted sugars (light caramel) over the salty make. A long ferment gives a fruity make that ages with a coastal, oily grace. Crosshill Loch water and a long ferment give the oily, coastal Glen Scotia make. A former owner, Duncan MacCallum, drowned in the loch that fed the distillery, and is said to haunt it. Refill oak lets the salty, oily Glen Scotia character lead the way.
At a hearty 56.2% it carries real weight. Citrus, salt and a soft vanilla, with a nutty, raisined red fruit from the cask. A baked apple and a sea salt lift it. A long, oily finish carries a sea salt and a citrus. This is a Campbeltown single malt of real character.
