Description
Glen Scotia from the distillery, a 6 year old, from 2018, cask 23/714-12, at 56.6%, 243 bottles in all. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt from the Loch Lomond Group, salty and oily in style. It sits on High Street in Campbeltown, on the Kintyre peninsula on the west coast.
It was made on Crosshill Loch water in the heart of Campbeltown, building a maritime character of sea salt and oil. It was matured in a Tawny Port cask, the wood working into the oily malt. In these extractive early years the oak gives vanillin as vanilla and oak lactones as coconut over a briny, oily spirit. The maritime setting on the Kintyre coast threads salt and brine through the spirit. It was founded in 1832 as Scotia, one of the survivors of Campbeltown's Victorian whisky boom. Refill oak lets the salty, oily Glen Scotia character lead the way.
At its natural 56.6% it is concentrated. Baked apple, brine and a creamy oil, with a nutty, raisined red fruit from the cask. It is oily and briny, the coastal spirit shining through. The close is oily and salted, fruit over a gentle oak. This is one of the last three Campbeltown malts.
