The Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottled this Glen Scotia, a 9 year old, distilled in 2013, from cask 93.189, bottled at 58.4%, one of 223 bottles. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt from the Loch Lomond Group, salty and oily in style. It has been owned by the Loch Lomond Group since the 1990s, after many changes of hands.

It was worked through the stills for an oily, coastal make, for an oily spirit with a coastal, salted edge. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak quiet behind the oily spirit. In these extractive early years the oak gives vanillin as vanilla and oak lactones as coconut over a briny, oily spirit. A long ferment gives a fruity make that ages with a coastal, oily grace. It is one of only three working distilleries left in Campbeltown, with Springbank and Glengyle. The cool, salt laden Campbeltown air gives a slow, coastal maturation in the warehouses.

At a natural 58.4% it is full and oily. Baked apple, brine and a creamy oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The texture is oily and coating, the fruit lifted by vanilla. Citrus, salt and a soft oak see out the finish. This is Glen Scotia, a survivor of the old whisky capital.
