Description
A Glen Scotia of a 24 year old chosen by the Pitlochry bottler Signatory Vintage, distilled in 1991, from cask 1076, bottled at 43%. Glen Scotia, founded in 1832, is one of the three surviving Campbeltown distilleries. Its Victoriana and single cask releases have won the distillery wide acclaim.
The spirit was distilled slowly in a single pair of stills for an oily, coastal make, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. A refill bourbon hogshead held it, keeping the salty, oily character to the fore. At this evaporative stage ellagitannins lend a drying structure while oxidation builds a richer, briny fruit. A long ferment gives a fruity make that ages with a coastal, oily grace. The slow distillation and shell and tube condensers give the oily Glen Scotia body. Years in oak round the spirit, the brine and citrus deepening to a salted toffee. Refill oak lets the salty, oily Glen Scotia character lead the way.
Bottled at 43%, it is rounded. Citrus, salt and a soft vanilla, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A dried fruit and a soft oak give it depth. It finishes long, briny and oily. This is one of the last three Campbeltown malts.
