Description
This Glen Scotia was bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, a 10 year old, distilled in 2014, from cask 93.217, bottled at 59.2%, one of 222 bottles. Glen Scotia is a Campbeltown single malt from a town once called the whisky capital of the world. Its malt comes from Greencore Maltings in southwest Scotland.
It was distilled slow for the salty, oily Glen Scotia style, giving a coastal, briny Campbeltown spirit. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak quiet behind the oily spirit. Through integration spirit and wood marry, vanillin settling into a rounded vanilla as ethyl esters lend a riper citrus and a salted toffee. Long ageing turns the fresh citrus towards dried fruit, salted toffee and a soft spice. A former owner, Duncan MacCallum, drowned in the loch that fed the distillery, and is said to haunt it. Its long ferment, averaging well over a hundred hours, builds a fruity, coastal character.
At its natural 59.2% it is concentrated. Citrus, salt and a soft vanilla, with a soft vanilla from the oak. A baked apple and a sea salt lift it. Citrus, salt and a soft oak see out the finish. This is Glen Scotia, a survivor of the old whisky capital.
