Description
A 15 year old Glen Moray from the bottler Wemyss Malts, distilled in 2007, bottled at 57.3%, one of 186 bottles. Glen Moray is a Speyside malt from Elgin, the heart of the Cutty Sark and Label 5 blends. It was a pioneer of wine cask finishing, working with Chardonnay casks back in the 1990s.
Made on River Lossie water and condensed in shell and tube condensers, for the light, fruity make Glen Moray is known for. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak quiet behind the light spirit. At oxidative maturity vanillin and lactones are fully expressed, the light fruit deepening to honey. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the light Speyside spirit. The cool Speyside air gives a slow, even maturation in the Glen Moray warehouses at Elgin. A gentle maturation suits the light make, the orchard fruit growing richer with time. It was built on Gallow Hill at Elgin, the old site of the town's hangings.
At a hearty 57.3% it carries real weight. Apple, pear and a soft vanilla, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath it run green apple, pear and a soft vanilla. The close is light and clean, fruit over a gentle oak. This is Glen Moray's clean, accessible Speyside style.
