Description
From the bottler The House of MacDuff, a 14 year old Glen Moray, distilled in 2008, from cask CM304, bottled at 54.1%, one of 220 bottles. Glen Moray is a Speyside malt from Elgin, the heart of the Cutty Sark and Label 5 blends. It was founded in 1897 in the converted Elgin West Brewery, on the banks of the River Lossie.
Run through the stills on River Lossie water for a light make, for a light, easy spirit with a soft malt. A refill bourbon hogshead held it, keeping the fresh, fruity character to the fore. In integration lactones (coconut) and vanillin (vanilla) knit with the spirit, the green apple deepening to honey and toffee. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the light Speyside spirit. Long ageing turns the fresh apple towards dried fruit, honey and a soft spice. A pioneer of wine cask finishing, Glen Moray has long layered fruit over its light malt.
At 54.1%, undiluted, it is deep and fruity. Pear, honey and a soft malt, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath it run green apple, pear and a soft vanilla. It finishes light, fresh and fruity. This is an approachable Speyside single malt from Elgin.
