Foursquare ECS Mark XVI Shibboleth is a sixteen-year Barbados single blend at 56%, layering coconut, vanilla and dried fruit over elegant oak and dark chocolate, dry, mature and additive-free, rewarding slow tasting with a splash of water.
Description
Shibboleth is the sixteenth release in Foursquare's ECS, Richard Seale's acclaimed single blend series from St Philip in Barbados. Like its siblings it marries double-retort pot still and column still rum from one distillery, distilled in 2005 and aged sixteen years, bottled with nothing added, the transparency and no-sugar stance that has made the line a benchmark.
The Bajan house style is balanced and refined, and this older release leans into elegant maturity. Coconut, vanilla and dried fruit sit over well-integrated oak and dark chocolate, with the wood present but never dominant despite the long ageing. At 56% it is full and dry, serious yet very drinkable, the kind of rum that opens further with time and a little water. For drinkers who already enjoy the ECS bottlings and want one that is older and more oak-and-coconut led without becoming overly woody, Shibboleth is a rewarding, contemplative pour.
