Eigashima Shuzo's White Oak range draws on a single malt programme that dates to the 1980s, anchored at the company's Akashi site in Hyogo prefecture, the holder of Japan's oldest whisky licence. This 5 Years Old is a cask strength single cask release bottled for the Belgian market from an Oloroso sherry cask at 55%.
The Oloroso influence layers dried fruit, walnut and a warm Christmas-spice quality over Eigashima's characteristically light and clean spirit. At 55% the whisky has enough weight to carry the sherry influence without losing the fresh cereal backbone, and the single cask bottling ensures the full character of that individual barrel comes through.
