This Dumbarton was bottled by The Caskhound, a 25 year old, at 46.9%. A dessert sweet old grain of coconut and vanilla. Its grain was the backbone of the Ballantine’s blend for decades. It was the largest grain distillery in Scotland, the backbone of Ballantine’s. This is a characterful relic of the lost Dumbarton.

Description
A Dumbarton single grain of a 25 year old chosen by the bottler The Caskhound, distilled in 2000, from cask 210783, bottled at 46.9%, one of 223 bottles. Dumbarton, one of Scotland's great grain distilleries, was demolished after closing in 2002. The geese featured in Ballantine's advertising and became a local landmark before being retired in 2012.
Worked through continuous columns from maize and malted barley, for a delicate spirit that leans on the cask with age. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, vanilla and crème brûlée building with age. In the oxidative, evaporative years concentration deepens the oils, coconut, toffee and a tropical fruit emerging. Continuous distillation gives a light, clean spirit, so decades in oak drive much of the flavour. Light grain takes oak readily, the ex-Bourbon lending coconut and vanilla over many years. With Dumbarton gone, every bottle draws on a finite, dwindling stock.
Bottled at a cask strength 46.9%, it is rich. The ex-Bourbon gives coconut from oak lactones and vanilla from vanillin, over a buttery toffee. The texture is oily and buttery, the sweetness coating. The finish runs soft, sweet and warm. This is a finite single grain from the lost Dumbarton distillery.
