A 20 year old Dumbarton single grain from the bottler The Vintage Malt Whisky Co Ltd, 2000, at 56.5%. Rich, oily grain with coconut, toffee and cream. It was the largest grain distillery in Scotland, the backbone of Ballantine’s. About a hundred geese, the Scotch Watch, guarded its warehouses from 1959. This is the deep, sweet grain of vanished Dumbarton.

From the bottler The Vintage Malt Whisky Co Ltd, a 20 year old Dumbarton single grain, distilled in 2000, from cask 211097, bottled at 56.5%, one of 234 bottles. Dumbarton is a closed grain distillery, its single grain now a finite, dwindling stock. It was taken over by Allied in 1987, and grain production later moved to Strathclyde.

The spirit was run off the distillery's continuous column stills, for a delicate spirit that leans on the cask with age. A bourbon hogshead held it, the long maturation drawing out a buttery coconut. Through oxidative maturity the grain turns oily and deep, coconut and crème brûlée to the fore. The high strength spirit mellows slowly into a soft, sweet old grain. Its iconic red brick tower, built to echo Hiram Walker's Canadian distillery, housed the continuous stills. Hiram Walker bought the Ballantine's blend in 1936 and built Dumbarton to supply its grain whisky. No more will ever be made, the distillery silent since 2002.

At cask strength 56.5% it is full bodied. Oak lactones lend a deep coconut and vanillin a sweet vanilla, with a crème brûlée richness. Coconut, toffee and a tropical fruit fill the middle. A long, buttery finish ends on coconut and vanilla. This is a finite single grain from the lost Dumbarton distillery.
