Description
This Dumbarton single grain was bottled by The Vintage Malt Whisky Co Ltd, a 20 year old, distilled in 2000, from cask 211094, bottled at 58.5%, one of 246 bottles. Dumbarton was Hiram Walker's great grain distillery, built to supply the Ballantine's blend. The complex also housed the Inverleven and Lomond malt stills, now also gone.
The spirit was distilled continuously in column stills from a maize and barley mash, for a delicate spirit that leans on the cask with age. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, vanilla and crème brûlée building with age. Into oxidative maturity the grain deepens, oak lactones giving a full coconut and vanillin a rich vanilla over the sweet spirit. Light grain takes oak readily, the ex-Bourbon lending coconut and vanilla over many years. Maturation in American oak suits the light, sweet grain particularly well. No more will ever be made, the distillery silent since 2002.
Bottled at a cask strength 58.5%, it is rich. Oak lactones lend a deep coconut and vanillin a sweet vanilla, with a crème brûlée richness. A creme brulee and a polished oak give it depth. The finish is deep, oily and creamy. This is an old single grain from closed Dumbarton.
