A ten year Reunion cane juice rum picked by Dugas for La Maison du Rhum, grassy and fruity with banana, peach and citrus lifted by a cognac cask twist, bottled at a balanced 45% that stays characterful yet easy.
Description
This 2010 vintage is a Riviere du Mat agricole-style rum from Reunion, selected by French importer Dugas for the La Maison du Rhum range. Made from fresh sugar-cane juice rather than molasses, it sits outside the protected agricole zone, so it is cane-juice rum by character, given a full decade of ageing and bottled at an approachable 45%.
The grassy, vegetal cane signature of the creole column leads, with a green, peppery nose carrying a faint glue lift typical of fresh cane, then ripe fruit, banana, peach and citrus filling out the palate. A finish in cognac casks rounds the edges and leaves a supple, warm, brandy-tinged close. The result is a lightly aged agricole with plenty of personality that still drinks easily, a good entry into Reunion cane juice for anyone curious about the grassy, fruity end of rum.
