Description
From the bottler Wemyss Malts, a 14 year old Dufftown, distilled in 2008, bottled at 46%, one of 323 bottles. Dufftown is one of Diageo's largest malt distilleries, founded in 1895 in a former mill. It runs a full lauter mash tun, twelve washbacks and six stills, and works around the clock.
The spirit was distilled from unpeated Speyside malt in the distillery's six stills, for the nutty, spicy make Dufftown is known for. Maturation came in ex-Bourbon wood, the oak quiet behind the smooth spirit. Integration folds eugenol (clove) and vanillin (vanilla) into the malt, the body softer and nuttier. Long ageing turns the fresh apple towards honey, dried fruit and a soft spice. The malty, nutty spirit takes cask flavour well while keeping its Speyside fruit. Refill oak lets the nutty, malty Dufftown character lead the way. Water from Jock's Well and a long ferment give the clean Dufftown make.
At an approachable 46% it is soft and easy. Honey, nut and a touch of spice, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath it run apple, malt and a soft honey. A smooth, malty finish ends on apple and a soft spice. This is Dufftown, a heart malt of the Bell's blend.
