A full-proof Clarendon single cask from Dram Mor, leaning funky with overripe banana, pineapple and raisin over charred, mocha-edged wood and a licorice finish, bottled unsweetened from a ten-year cask at 63%.
Description
Scottish bottler Dram Mor selected this Clarendon as a single cask, aged ten years in ex-bourbon and bottled at full proof, 63%. Clarendon is one of Jamaica's workhorse estates running both pot and column, and this draws on its funkier pot-still side.
Molasses-based and from the double-retort pot still, it shows overripe banana, raisin and pineapple on the nose, then a charred, slightly burnt palate of banana and overripe fruit with mocha and wood depth, before a finish of tropical fruit, ester, vegetal notes and licorice. The funk here is real but balanced by the cask's roasted character, landing somewhere between Hampden-style intensity and a more restrained, wood-driven Clarendon. Certified unsweetened and powerful, it sips best slowly and with a little water, a characterful full-proof pour for drinkers who like their Jamaican rum bold.
