A Diamond carrying the Port Mourant marque under Hunter Laing’s Kill Devil label, eighteen years old at 54.2 percent, with orange peel, black pepper and citrus over a salty, vanilla-edged palate of PM wood and spice.
Description
Kill Devil is Hunter Laing's rum line, and this Diamond 2004 is an eighteen year old single cask bottled at cask strength, 54.2 percent, showing the Port Mourant profile recreated at the Diamond site. Kill Devil bottlings are natural, non-chill-filtered and unembellished, mostly European-aged single casks in the whisky-house tradition.
Matured in ex-bourbon wood, the nose carries orange peel, black pepper, citrus and barrel, with the palate turning to barrel, a distinct salty note, vanilla and citrus. Drinkers single out an intense, agreeable salinity alongside the wood, spice and light sweetness of the PM character, finding it smooth for its strength even as the marque's pronounced wood divides opinion. It is a salty, spicy and citric Port Mourant, dry and full-proof, for drinkers who already enjoy the heaviest Demerara still and want it with a coastal edge.
