Description
This Craigellachie was bottled by the bottler Whiskymax, a 9 year old, distilled in 2008, from cask 729, bottled at 46%, one of 300 bottles. Craigellachie sits above Telford's famous Spey bridge, a Speyside distillery of real muscle. Worm tubs give little copper contact, so the new spirit is robust and full, mellowing to tropical fruit with age.
The spirit was made in copper stills whose worm tubs build a robust make, to build a robust, sulphurous, full bodied character. A Pedro Ximenez cask added raisin, date and a treacle sweetness. Young and extractive, the cask sheds vanillin (vanilla) and toasted sugars (light caramel) over the meaty spirit, the worm tub character still struck match sharp. The cool Speyside air gives a slow, even maturation, the young sulphur fading to fruit. The heavy, oily make is prized by blenders for the backbone it gives White Horse.
At 46% it is clean and soft. A heavy, oily maltiness, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. A dried fruit and a savoury, oily depth give it weight. It finishes robust, waxy and warm. This is the muscular, meaty Speyside malt of Craigellachie.
