Description
From the Huntly bottler Duncan Taylor, a 12 year old Craigellachie, distilled in 2008, from cask 75900399, bottled at 55.4%, one of 336 bottles. Craigellachie was founded in 1891 by a consortium led by Peter Mackie of White Horse fame. It was launched as a single malt brand in 2014, with a bare knuckle, old fashioned image.
The spirit was worked through stills and worm tubs for a muscular, oily spirit, for the muscular, meaty make Craigellachie is known for. Maturation in an Oloroso cask laid dried fruit over the meaty, oily malt. In integration lactones (coconut) and vanillin (vanilla) knit with the malt, the worm tub weight softening to tropical fruit. Years in oak round the spirit, the worm tub weight turning to pineapple and wax. Worm tubs give little copper contact, so the new spirit is robust and full, mellowing to tropical fruit with age.
At cask strength 55.4% it is full bodied. A robust, oily fruitiness, with dried fruit, fig and walnut from the cask. Pineapple, malt and a savoury wax fill the middle. The finish runs meaty, waxy and warm. This is a full bodied Speyside single malt of real character.
