CoR Uitvlugt Ed. 4 1990

The Colours of Rum, the young Warsaw bottler known for top tier purist single casks, released this 31 year Uitvlugt at a gentle 48.4 percent, unsweetened and naturally presented in the no additives style the house insists on. Uitvlugt typically gives a refined, lightly spiced Demerara, and here long, cool continental ageing has taken it somewhere quiet and mineral.

Finished in a whisky cask, the molasses spirit shows anise, barrel and pencil shavings on the nose, then a dry, nutty and herbal palate with a mild, woody and spicy finish rather than big fruit or esters. The whole thing reads relaxed and Scotch adjacent, the wood influence soft for its age. This is a pour for drinkers who enjoy older Demerara or unpeated single malt and want a calm, herbal mineral rum to sip slowly, rewarding attention rather than demanding it.
