Connemara is the flag bearer of peated Irish whiskey, made at the Cooley distillery in Co. Louth, which revived the smoked style after its founding in 1987 when the rest of Ireland had let it lapse. This 2016 bottling for Europe is the core no age statement expression at 40%.
Ex-bourbon casks give it a honeyed, vanilla frame, and the peat shows a surprising range across the glass, heather smoke first, then a gently medicinal, coal gas flicker, citrus, and dried hay in the finish. Softer than Islay but unmistakably smoky, and double distilled for extra texture, it remains the reference point against which every other peated Irish whiskey is measured.
