This is an early batch of Connemara Cask Strength, bottled in 2004 for Poland at 58.9%. At the time, Cooley in Co. Louth was still a lone independent voice in Irish whiskey, and Connemara its boldest argument, peated single malt in a country that had all but abandoned smoke, here presented undiluted.

The whiskey matured in ex-bourbon casks and carries no age statement, in the house style of turf smoke over honey, malt and green fruit, with the extra weight and oil that Cooley's double distillation preserves. At full strength the peat arrives first and lingers longest. Bottlings from these early 2000s batches are increasingly hard to find, snapshots of the brand before its wider fame.
