Bog oak is timber recovered from Irish peatland, blackened and hardened by thousands of years beneath the bog, and Cooley put it to use in this cask strength Connemara, batch V11/07, released for Germany in 2011 in an edition of 1,000 bottles. It is one of the more unusual pieces of wood experimentation the Co. Louth distillery attempted with its peated single malt.

The whiskey matured in ex-bourbon casks with the bog oak influence layered over, and at an undiluted 57.5% it comes on dense and dark, turf smoke and coal heat over malt extract, citrus and a tangle of new and old wood. The ancient timber suits the peat, bog meeting bog, and gives this Connemara a rooted, elemental character unlike anything else in the range.
