Description
Connemara is Ireland's great peat exception, a smoked single malt from the Cooley distillery on the Cooley peninsula in Co. Louth. Founded in 1987 by John Teeling, Cooley broke the monopoly then held over Irish whiskey and set about reviving lost styles, none more striking than peated Irish malt, a tradition that had all but vanished from the island. Original is the entry point to the range, a no age statement bottling that carries the flag worldwide.
Double distilled in the Scottish manner rather than triple distilled, the spirit keeps a fuller, more textured frame, then matures in ex-bourbon casks. Heather smoke leads, softer and sweeter than Islay peat, over honey, fresh fruit and a citrus lift, with new oak and a dry, hay like note through the finish. Bottled at 40%, it remains the natural first step into peated Irish whiskey.
