    Clynelish 44 Years Old 1972 Cask #RO/16/07 (G&M)

    Rare Old
    700ml / 42.2%
    Single Malt

    $3423

A 44 year old Clynelish from the Elgin house Gordon and MacPhail, 1972, at 42.2%. Candle wax, lemon and a coastal salt run through it. Its waxy texture is prized above almost any other by blenders. Two old Brora warehouses still stand on the site. The original Clynelish of 1819 became Brora, closed in 1983 and revived in 2021. This is the cult waxy malt of the Sutherland coast.

The Elgin house Gordon and MacPhail selected this Clynelish, a 44 year old, distilled in 1972, from cask RO/16/07, bottled at 42.2%, one of 267 bottles. Clynelish is a coastal Highland distillery at Brora in Sutherland, famous for its waxy single malt. Water comes from the Clynemilton Burn, the spirit drawn off three wash and three spirit stills.

The spirit was worked through the tall stills for a citrussy, oily spirit, to build a waxy, coastal, citrussy spirit. An ex-Bourbon barrel shaped it, vanilla beneath the oily, coastal spirit. Ethereal and old, decades draw the malt to a waxy, tropical delicacy of sotolon, beeswax and polished oak. Vanillin and oak lactones from the wood lend vanilla and coconut over the wax. Most of its make goes to blending, with a fourteen year old the flagship single malt. Active wood frames the citrus without smothering the waxy texture.

At a hearty 42.2% it carries real weight. A thick wax over orchard fruit and citrus, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Soft citrus and a honeyed wax sit behind the cask. Citrus, wax and a faint brine see out the finish. This is the famously waxy Highland malt of Clynelish.
