Description
From the bottler Wilson & Morgan, a 20 year old Clynelish, distilled in 2005, from cask 102409, bottled at 52%, one of 215 bottles. Clynelish is a waxy, citrussy Highland single malt from the village of Brora. The original Clynelish was founded in 1819 by the Marquess of Stafford during the Highland Clearances.
The spirit was distilled for the waxy, oily spirit Clynelish is known for, for a maritime spirit with a beeswax richness. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the soft oak letting the waxy citrus lead. Into oxidative maturity, slow air ingress builds fruity ethyl esters (orange and pineapple) over the deepening wax. Refill oak lets the famous Clynelish wax lead, lemon and honey beneath. The waxy, oily spirit takes cask flavour well while keeping its citrus and coast. The famous wax is said to come from the build up in the distillery's feints receivers. Clynelish sits on the North Sea coast at Brora, in the far north east of the Highlands.
At a natural 52% it is full and oily. Beeswax, citrus and a honeyed oil, with a soft vanilla from the oak. The mouthfeel is oily, the citrus carried on a waxy body. The finish runs waxy, coastal and clean. This is an oily, maritime Highland single malt.
