This single cask Clonakilty bottling took blended Irish whiskey somewhere darker, giving it the full influence of an ex-stout cask that previously held Middle Ages beer, cask 5495. It was bottled only for the Belgian market, an outturn of just 84 bottles from the Co. Cork distillery's experimental cask programme.
Stout casks give Irish whiskey dark chocolate, espresso and roasted grain notes, and at an undiluted 54.3% this one delivers them with force, over the fresh fruit and honey base of the Clonakilty blend. A splash of water opens cocoa and cream, and the roasty grip lingers, a beer lover's whiskey from a distillery happy to experiment.
