Description
Clarendon is one of the island's great workhorse distilleries, running both pot and column, and its pot still marks can be genuinely funky. This Rum Sponge release from Decadent Drinks marries casks distilled in 2011 and 2013 into a ten year old, bottled at cask strength and trading on Clarendon's estery, tropical character rather than restraint.
Distilled from molasses on the pot still and matured in ex-bourbon oak, the rum opens on ester, leather, fruity polish and pineapple. The palate is driven by ester and bright fruit wrapped around milk chocolate and caramel, then the finish returns to banana, pineapple and oak. At 57.1% it is lively and concentrated, a fruit and funk forward Jamaican aimed at drinkers who shop for high ester pot still character and want it neat.
