An ultra-old, bone-dry Clarendon bottled under Planteray by Maison Ferrand, this 40 Year Old single cask pushes intense oak, menthol and solventy fruit alongside dark chocolate and sour cherry, distilled on the pot still and bottled unsweetened at 57.2%.
Description
This 40 Year Old single cask comes from Clarendon, distilled on the pot still from molasses in 1984 and bottled under the Planteray label by Maison Ferrand. Four decades of maturation, much of it tropical, have driven the rum to the dry, tannic extreme of the Jamaican spectrum, where wood and essential oils dominate and the fruit turns sour and concentrated.
The nose is woody with sour cherry, dark chocolate and a fruity edge, the palate is intense and woody with sour and orange notes, and the finish is long, tannic and menthol-streaked with cherry, citrus and a cognac-like depth. Certified unsweetened and bottled at 57.2%, this is not an easy pour, it is an old, austere Clarendon for experienced drinkers who chase deeply aged, oak-forward Jamaica and want to taste what 40 years does to the style. Slow sipping only.
