Description
The Thousand Crane Series is a named domestic release from Chichibu distillery in Saitama, one of the named collections that Venture Whisky uses to distinguish specific batches within its single cask programme. This 2011 vintage was bottled in 2018 at 7 years old for the Japanese domestic market at cask strength, under the direction of founder Ichiro Akuto.
The maturation is a single Madeira cask, a wine-seasoned vessel that builds dried fruit, fig, brown sugar and a honeyed wine-like warmth over the course of its influence. Seven years is enough time for Madeira wood to make a full impression on Chichibu's fruit-forward new make, threading its richer, sweeter dried-fruit character through the distillery's brighter orchard baseline. At 63.7% this is among the more powerfully intense bottlings in the batch, arriving at high cask strength with the Madeira influence prominent and direct.
