Description
Chichibu Distillery in Saitama is known for pushing well beyond bourbon and sherry in its cask programme, and red wine wood is one of the more expressive tools in its repertoire. Single cask #11969 was distilled in 2014, matured nine years in a red wine cask and bottled at 62.4% in 2023 for the German market as a distillery release.
Nine years in red wine wood transforms Chichibu's typically vibrant and fruit-forward new make into something richer and more vinous: ripe berry, dried cherry and a hint of tannic grip sit alongside the distillery's characteristic orchard fruit, and the longer maturation adds a layer of integration that shorter expressions from the same vintage may lack. At cask strength, the wine cask influence is present without eclipsing the spirit underneath.
