Description
This single cask Chichibu was distilled at the Saitama distillery in 2011 and bottled in 2019 at 8 years old for event release, carrying the Ichiro's Malt brand that founder Ichiro Akuto uses across Venture Whisky's individual cask programme. The release comes at cask strength.
The maturation is a single Ex-Bourbon cask, and eight years in American oak has produced an unusual character profile. The noted flavours of cooked fruit, fresh fruit, medicinal and a faint plastic note suggest a cask that has worked in an unexpected direction, perhaps showing more extractive wood influence than a more neutral barrel might. Cooked or preserved fruit and medicinal character can appear in older Chichibu expressions where the barrel has had a stronger say over the new make's baseline freshness. At 50.5% this sits lower than many Chichibu cask-strength releases, indicating some dilution or natural evaporative loss.
