Description
Chichibu, the Saitama distillery founded in 2008 by Ichiro Akuto of Venture Whisky, produces single malt in small batches with a fruit-driven new make that responds well to extended maturation. This single cask was distilled in 2014, spent nine years in Ex-Bourbon wood and was bottled in 2023 at 61.9%, selected by La Maison du Whisky for the French market.
Nine years in a bourbon barrel gives this Chichibu more integration and depth than its younger siblings from the same vintage: vanilla and coconut from the American oak have had time to thread into the distillery's orchard fruit character, and the resulting whisky is richer and rounder while retaining the brightness that defines the house style. At cask strength, the French bottling is a considered selection for a discerning audience.
