Description
Chichibu Distillery in Saitama has always run an unusually varied cask programme for a young producer, and cask #11043 is a vivid example. Distilled in 2014 and matured for nine years in an IPA beer cask, it was bottled in 2023 at 59.5% by The Whisky Exchange for the UK market, part of a continuing collaboration between the British retailer and the Saitama distillery.
IPA beer casks bring a bitterness and hop-resin character that transforms Chichibu's typically fruit-forward new make into something more angular and complex. Over nine years, the hops integrate with the cereal and citrus of the spirit, giving a whisky that is simultaneously bright and bitter, fruity and resinous. The length of maturation smooths the harder edges while keeping the beer cask's distinctive personality alive throughout.
