Description
Cardenal Mendoza Angêlus is an orange liqueur from the Bodega Sánchez Romate Hermanos in Spain, built on a base of brandy aged by the traditional Solera method, which lends the spirit depth before the orange is added. It sits at a full 40%, marrying the warmth of aged brandy to fresh, vibrant orange, and is bottled in the brand's rounded black bottle. The Solera brandy base is what sets it apart from a clean neutral spirit triple sec.
The nose is complex with orange blossom and citrus zest over vanilla and caramelised sugar, and the palate is rich, sweet orange meeting clove spice and a hint of roasted coffee, closing long and warming on sweet and spicy flavours. Behind the bar that brandy depth is the point: where a triple sec lifts and brightens, this adds richness, oak and weight, so it shines in stirred and brandy based drinks and rounds a Sidecar riff. It also closes a meal beautifully alongside chocolate truffles or crème brûlée. Serve it neat from a warmed glass, or stirred.
