Description
Stirk Consultants Co. Ltd bottled this Cameronbridge single grain, a 30 year old distilled in 1992 and bottled at 50%. Cameronbridge was founded in 1824 by John Haig, of the great Haig distilling family, in Fife. Water comes from Loch Leven, the mash from wheat, the spirit drawn off three column stills.
The spirit was made in continuous stills from wheat for a light spirit, for a light, sweet make of real purity. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, the wood adding coconut and vanilla. Around twenty five years the grain gains a fuller toffee and an oily weight. Patient ageing gives the oily, waxy texture prized in old single grain. Its single grain has long been sold as Cameron Brig, and since 2014 as Haig Club. Water comes from Loch Leven, the mash from wheat, the spirit off three column stills. It is among the largest distilleries in Europe, making well over a hundred million litres a year. John Haig's cousin Robert Stein invented the continuous still, and Cameronbridge was among the first to run one.
At a hearty 50% it carries real weight. The ex-Bourbon gives toffee, vanilla and a soft oil. The mouthfeel is oily, the coconut carried on a sweet body. Toffee and vanilla see out a long finish. This is the grain behind Cameron Brig and Haig Club.
