Bushmills World Wood Series 21 Year Old launched in September 2023 alongside the 15 Year Old iteration, as part of the first World Wood Travel Retail Exclusive releases. Initial availability focused on Asia Pacific duty free, with Dublin Airport noted as the key European stockist at launch, and it is defined by a long finishing stage in first fill Marsala wine casks from Sicily.
Matured in a combination of ex bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry butts for a minimum of 18 years, it is then finished for a further three years in Marsala casks seasoned with Marsala Fine Ambra Semisecco DOC. That detail matters because this is an amber, semi dry fortified wine style, which tends to load the oak with caramelised sweetness and citrus toned richness rather than heavy tannin. It adds a distinct layer on top of the bourbon and sherry foundation, without pushing the whiskey into overly sticky dessert territory.
Bourbon maturation brings vanilla and sweet oak structure, Oloroso adds deeper dried fruit and gentle spice, and the Marsala finish lifts it with candied orange, warming ginger and stone fruit notes, alongside hazelnut and chocolate depth. The end result is a fruit forward profile with extra sweetness and roundness from the fortified wine influence, carried by a long, mature oak finish.
