Description
Distilled on 6 April 1992 and bottled in 2020, this 28 year old single malt from Bushmills was released as part of The Causeway Collection and made available exclusively for the German market. With an outturn of approximately 698 bottles, it represents a focused, single-market release drawn from long-matured stock.
After extended maturation, the whiskey was finished in Malaga casks and bottled at 53.6 percent ABV. The higher bottling strength plays an important role here, helping preserve aromatic lift and structural definition in a spirit that has already undergone nearly three decades of oxidation and concentration in wood.
Over long ageing, oxygen slowly entering through the cask reshapes the spirit, converting sharper alcohols and acids into more stable compounds while reducing volatility. Fresh fermentation fruit gives way to darker, more settled flavours, and the texture becomes denser as evaporation concentrates what remains in the cask.
The Malaga cask finish reinforces this direction. Malaga is a fortified wine produced with significant oxidative handling and high residual sugar, which leaves behind pre-oxidised compounds absorbed into the wood. When mature spirit enters these casks, those compounds dissolve gradually, supporting dried fruit, raisin and nut-led sweetness rather than fresh or high-toned wine character. The influence is weighty and persistent, adding depth without pushing the whiskey toward overt sweetness.
On the nose, the whiskey shows dense, dark fruit supported by warm spice and seasoned oak. The palate is concentrated and structured, with dried fruit, caramelised sugars and controlled bitterness providing balance and shape. The finish is long and steady, with fruit and spice lingering as the oak influence slowly recedes.
