Description
Distilled on 22 June 2010 and bottled in 2022, this 12 year old single malt from Bushmills was matured in a combination of bourbon and tequila casks and released as part of The Causeway Collection at 52.8 percent ABV, with a limited outturn of around 4,000 bottles for the Polish market.
At twelve years, the whiskey has built enough structural body from oak contact to take on additional finishing influence without losing clarity. The choice of tequila casks alongside traditional bourbon barrels introduces an unexpected dimension. Tequila-seasoned wood carries remnants of the distillate and its own oxidative history. These leftover compounds can include congeners and volatile phenolics that interact with spirit differently than wine or fortified wine barrels, creating distinct spice, fresh fruit and earthier notes rather than simple sweetness. Reviewers note on the nose a mix of toffee, apples and stone fruit, alongside waxy and peppery notes reminiscent of the tequila barrels.
The palate reflects this layered influence. At elevated strength, the whiskey feels expressive and alive. Sweetness, fruit and subtle spice interplay with peppery warmth and cocoa-like dryness rather than a clear dominant theme. Some impressions lean toward apple flesh with peel, dark earth and peach, while spice and pepper rise and fall across the sip.
The finish is warming and medium long, with dry cocoa and fruit stone lingering alongside the structural oak backbone. This release is not a textbook wine-cask expression; its character comes from the interaction of spirit with tequila-seasoned wood and bourbon influence, producing a profile that is both expressive and a bit unconventional.
This 2010 Causeway bottling stands out because of its unexpected finishing component and higher strength, making it a bold, straightforward expression that leans into wood influence and distinctive cask character rather than subtlety or extreme polish.
