A wood-forward Dominican from Brugal, drier than most of its neighbours with vanilla, caramel, oak and peppery spice, a budget mixer at a low 37.5% better suited to rum and cola.
Description
Brugal's Extra Viejo is a Dominican molasses rum carrying an eight year age statement, a column still spirit matured in ex-bourbon wood and bottled at a low 37.5%. Brugal tests effectively dry, which sets it apart from the island's sweeter ron and gives this a leaner, more wood-led profile.
The nose brings vanilla, caramel, oak and a fruity edge, with the palate turning woody, spicy and peppery and the finish staying woody and peppery with a touch of sharpness against light sweetness. The dryness is a genuine point of difference, though at this proof it reads more functional than refined. It works best as a budget, wood-forward mixer, sound in a rum and cola, with drinkers chasing complexity or neat-sipping quality better served elsewhere.
