A balanced, mid strength Port Mourant from closed distillery specialist Bristol Classic Rum, twenty three years old and port finished, with dried fruit, vanilla and green apple over roasted oak and black pepper at 47.2%.
Description
Bristol Classic Rum, the long running English house that has specialised in closed distillery rum since the early nineties, bottled this 1999 Port Mourant for Haromex. PM is the marque of the double wooden pot still, the heaviest Demerara profile, but at twenty three years and a moderate strength this is a rounded, balanced expression rather than an oil heavy bruiser. The extra age has settled it into an easygoing maturity.
Distilled from molasses, matured in oak and finished in port, it noses on dried fruit, oak, vanilla and green apple, then carries roasted notes, dried fruit and black pepper onto the palate before a fruity, young wood finish. There is plenty of caramel, dried fruit, herbs and liquorice here, the classic PM grammar in a gentler register. Bottled at 47.2%, it trades cask strength punch for accessibility, and while some may want more power and less wood, it makes a very classic, well balanced entry point into aged Demerara.
