John Jameson 12 Years Old is a heritage blend from the Jameson house, labelled Special Old Irish Whiskey and prepared at 40% for the American market. It traces to Bow Street in Dublin's Smithfield, the John Jameson & Son distillery that ran until 1971, and the pot still backbone of these older blends shows the weight of its age.
Twelve years in ex-bourbon casks built a profile of dried fruit and a light sherried sweetness, layered with old wood, a yeasty undertone and the faint coal gas character that time in glass and cask lends to bottlings of this vintage. The grain whiskey keeps it supple, while the pot still portion carries a slow, earthy spice.
