Boann marks the turning of the year with its Solstice releases, and this Summer Solstice edition is a single cask oddity, single pot still spirit from Drogheda, Co. Meath matured in a Rivesaltes ambré barrique, a cask that held oxidatively aged vin doux naturel from Roussillon in the south of France. Cask 12 yielded 401 half litre bottles for the Irish market.
Rivesaltes ambré is all candied orange, apricot and rancio honey, and the barrique passes those notes straight into the whiskey, wrapping them around the green apple, ginger and black pepper of the young spirit. Bottled at its full 60.5% cask strength, it is concentrated and confectionary at first, then increasingly savoury, with walnut, orange peel and a waxy pot still texture through the finish.
