Description
Berliner Brandstifter is produced in Berlin in small batches, with an emphasis on slow, careful distillation over volume. The base is regionally grown grain, distilled and then filtered seven times, each pass removing more of the rougher compounds and building toward the smooth, velvety texture the brand is after. It is bottled at 43.3%, a touch above the usual 40%, which gives it a fuller presence on the palate while the heavy filtration keeps it mild. The aim is a balance of purity and flavour rather than a fully stripped-back neutral spirit.
The nose shows fine grain with a hint of floral and a slightly sweet edge. The palate is soft and full with wheat notes, light sweetness and a subtle herbal spice, and the finish is long, smooth and mild despite the strength. That extra strength and clean structure stand up well to coffee, so make an Espresso Martini: shake it hard with fresh espresso, a little coffee liqueur and a touch of sugar, then strain into a chilled glass so the vodka's body holds firm behind the coffee.
