Description
Berentzen Saurer Apfel is an apple liqueur from the Berentzen house in Lower Saxony, a German distiller since 1758. It joins finely distilled wheat grain to crisp fresh apples, the careful apple selection giving a natural freshness and a balance of sweet and sour, bottled here at 16% in a one litre format. It became a party favourite in 1990s Germany on the strength of that sweet and sour character.
The nose is fruity and crisp with apple, the palate sour, fruity and clearly apple led, long on the palate. Behind the bar its job is bright apple flavour and tart acidity, the reason it carries an apple sour and lifts a fizz with a sharp green edge. It is built to be poured ice cold as a shot, and it refines juices, sparkling wine and lemonades into a refreshing long drink. Serve it well chilled, where the sour apple snaps cleanest.
