Smoky and unusual, this 15 Year Old Barbancourt Volcanic Cane is a Haitian cane-juice rum finished in peated Islay casks, all peat smoke, charred wood, caramel and citrus, a crossover bottling at a measured 46.7%.
Description
Barbancourt is Haiti's most famous distillery, and this Volcanic Cane release takes a fifteen-year cane-juice rum from the 2008 vintage and finishes it in peated Islay whisky casks. Distilled from fresh sugar-cane juice, it is agricole in spirit, but this bottling is defined far more by its cask than by its origin.
The peated finish dominates: dense peat smoke, charred wood and a roasted, ashy character that runs from nose to finish, with caramel and citrus surfacing underneath. Bottled at 46.7%, it drinks remarkably like a smoky single malt, to the point that the recognisable Barbancourt cane character is largely buried. This is a deliberate crossover for drinkers who love peated whisky and want to try it through a rum lens, rather than a showcase of Haitian cane.
