An unsweetened 57% single-cask Dominican cane-juice rum from 1423 S.B.S finished in port casks, dry and dark with chocolate, coffee, roasted wood, red fruit and honey, a comfortable cigar-side sipper despite the fuller strength.
Description
This A.F.D. S.B.S 2012 is a single-cask Dominican rum from 1423 of Denmark, distilled by Alcoholes Finos Dominicanos and bottled in the house's transparent, unsweetened, naturally presented style. It is made from fresh sugar cane juice rather than molasses, distilled on a column still, carried eleven years and finished in port casks before bottling at a robust 57%.
The port wood is unmistakable: the nose greets you with that characteristic port lift alongside chocolate, dried fruit and roasted notes, with a palate of wood, roasted character, honey and cocoa and a finish of wood, dried fruit, chocolate and leather. Because nothing is added, the dark, dessert-leaning flavours come from the cane spirit and the wine cask rather than dosage, giving it a drier, more honest feel than a sugared port-finished ron. The 57% strength sits comfortably rather than aggressively, making it a warming, undemanding sipper and a natural cigar partner.
