Macallan is Speyside’s great name for sherried whisky, made on the Easter Elchies estate above the Spey since 1824. The distillery is known for an unusually rich, oily spirit taken from small stills, and for pouring vast resources into oak: sherry-seasoned casks, largely European and American, are shaped to its own specification in Spain and shipped north, so wood is treated as half the recipe rather than an afterthought.The house style is deep and generous: dried fruit, orange, ginger, chocolate and a warming sherry sweetness, at its fullest in the Sherry Oak range and lighter in the Double and Fine Oak expressions. Polished, sherry-led and instantly recognisable, it is many drinkers’ first idea of what luxury single malt tastes like.
