Description
This Glen Moray was bottled by the Italian bottler Samaroli, an 18 year old, distilled in 1992, from cask 5662, bottled at 45%, one of 484 bottles. Glen Moray, founded in 1897 in a former brewery, is one of Speyside's best loved malts. It closed in 1910 and reopened in 1923 under Macdonald and Muir of Glenmorangie.
It was made on River Lossie water and condensed in shell and tube condensers, building the fresh Glen Moray style. It rested in ex-Bourbon oak, oak lactones lending vanilla and a little coconut. Into oxidative maturity, slow air ingress builds fruity ethyl esters (apple and pear) and a honeyed depth. Active wood frames the fruit without overwhelming the light Speyside spirit. It has been owned since 2008 by the French house La Martiniquaise. Most of its malt matures first in American oak ex-Bourbon before any cask finish. River Lossie water and the tall stills give the light Glen Moray make.
At an approachable 45% it is light and easy. Pear, honey and a soft malt, with a soft vanilla from the oak. It is fresh and fruity, the light spirit shining through. A long, fruity finish carries a green apple and a soft spice. This is a fresh, fruity Speyside single malt.
