Description
This official Glen Moray, at 40%. Glen Moray is a Speyside malt from Elgin, the heart of the Cutty Sark and Label 5 blends. It was built on Gallow Hill at Elgin, the old site of the town's hangings.
The spirit was distilled light and fruity in the Glen Moray style, for a light, easy spirit with a soft malt. Ex-Bourbon casks held it, the gentle American oak letting the light fruit lead. Without an age statement, vanillin sweetness and an orchard fruit point to good years in oak. The light, fruity make takes cask flavour well while keeping its apple and pear. It closed in 1910 and reopened in 1923 under Macdonald and Muir of Glenmorangie. Its water is drawn from the River Lossie, which runs past the distillery at Elgin. It was founded in 1897 in the converted Elgin West Brewery, on the banks of the River Lossie. Most of its malt matures first in American oak ex-Bourbon before any cask finish.
Reduced to 40%, it is mellow. A clean, fruity sweetness, with a soft vanilla from the oak. Beneath it run green apple, pear and a soft vanilla. It finishes light, fresh and fruity. This is Glen Moray, a pioneer of cask finishing.
