Isle of Jura Boutique Barrels 1993

This Boutique Barrels 1993 is a hand-picked cask release from Isle of Jura, matured in Oloroso sherry and drawn from one of the distillery's occasional peated runs. An outturn of 300 bottles for the Netherlands, it shows a smokier side of Jura. The distillery is the lone producer on its remote Hebridean island.

Rebuilt in 1963 for a mostly unpeated, light spirit, Jura ran peated batches in the 1990s that feed bottlings like this. Matured in Oloroso casks, the sherry wood meets the peat.

Bottled at its natural cask strength of 54%. The Oloroso gives dried fruit while guaiacol and phenols carry the smoke. The recorded notes run to a coal-gas mineral edge, a kippered smoked note, leather, a mossy earthiness, an oily texture and smoke. A smoky, sherried boutique Jura.
